Oding Morgan City Wash

Following the epic oding trip to Patagonia, Caleb and I were back at it again on the morning of July 21st, 2017.  We drove north up the I-17 to Black Canyon City to ode the riparian corridor of the Agua Fria River.  Unfortunately, the river was brown, muddy, ugly, and flooded.  We took some time to look for things just incase we might find something good.  There were a few birds, leps, herps, and a few odes.  A quick glimpse at my lifer Filagree Skimmer evaded any looks beyond two seconds.  But we did see an uncommon sight, a perched Pale-faced Clubskimmer.

We then decided to ode Morgan City Wash, which we knew wouldn't be so flooded and which we knew that we would likely have a good chance of a good oding outing.  And Morgan didn't disappoint!

We didn't have anything rare, but Morgan City is awesome.  There were plenty of odes to look through.  I even got a lifer when Caleb found my first ever Lavender Dancer.

And then another Lavender Dancer.

Morgan City Wash is known for thriving populations of Black Setwing.  It's really true, as Caleb and I had close to 30 individuals.

Here is a California Dancer.

A surprise came along when Caleb spied our second perched Pale-faced Clubskimmer of the day!  Morgan is known for this and Black Setwing, and we really got our fill of both as this sighting clinched that.

And then we had at least 5 of the awesome Comanche Skimmer.  This was only the second time I got to see this species, which was also with Caleb.  However, this time, these big skimmers perched much closer and much more cooperatively.

Here's a Flame Skimmer from Morgan.

Something cool was seeing this Comanche Skimmer and Black Setwing perched by each other!

Thanks Caleb for a fun day of oding!
